Robert Jordan, American teacher of Spanish is attached to a Republican guerilla unit in the Spanish Civil War. His task is to blow a bridge in the mountains to aid in a Republican offensive with the help of whoever he can recruit locally. During his mission he meets Maria, a young woman rescued from the fascist group who murdered her parents with whom he falls in love.

Great story. Honour, duty, destiny, corruption, danger, betrayal, love, and bull-fighting.
