Doctors in DenialBack in the 60's Prof Green (National Women's Hospital, Auckland) believed that carcinoma in-situ of the cervix (CIS) could be left untreated, and his practice was to merely observe and monitor his patients. However, there was general acceptance worldwide at the time, that CIS was a precursor of cancer, and required treatment. Many of Prof Green's patients developed cancer, some died, and his work was later labelled "the unfortunate experiment". Ron Jones and colleagues published a paper in 1984 that exposed the truth, and led to a public enquiry, presided over by Judge Silvia Cartwright.

Fascinating read, especially given the local setting.
